Compassionate Empowered Women in Motion is a project serving economically challenged women in social, psychological and health transitions of all ages and stages residing in or working/studying in downtown San Diego and surrounding neighborhoods using dialogue, movement, music, martial arts, stretching, breath work and intentional self compassion.

Ilana Queiroz is a trained social worker, teaching artist, dancer and musician and resident artist with the World Compassion Project.   She has over twenty years experience creating spaces for San Diegans of all ages to feel safe in expressing themselves through movement, music and community rituals based on her training in social work, yoga and her personal roots in the  Afro- Brazilian Art forms of Capoeira, Samba and afro-latin percussion.

The Problem

Within the county of San Diego, Downtown Central San Diego, Mid-City and South East San Diego, Compassionate Empowered Women focuses on “economically stressed” working families/women and families in flux due to illness, job and family transitions where housing costs as a percentage of income are highest.  This means that when families and women are stressed to meet basic needs, self care is not a part of the budget, even when self care might be the key to a better quality of life.

The Solution

The class series creates a safe space for a group of committed participants to voice a vision for themselves and to express emotions and challenges on the path to a personal or family goal. Movement dialogue, partnering exercises and accountability create bonds between participants and compassion for the process of becoming.  Participants create a personal understanding of what a joyous journey can mean. Working as a group each individual learns to value each part of his or her narrative path as beautiful and worthy of celebration

The Stats

San Diego is one of the most expensive cities in the country to live. The San Diego Central region has the highest rate of single family parents in the county.

  • Single Parent Families in San Diego Central Region 52% 52%
  • Students receiving financial waivers to attend 80% 80%
  • Students who would not attend without scholarship 70% 70%
